Część A (0 – 12 pkt.)

Przeczytaj uważnie tekst i ułóż wydarzenia w takiej kolejności, w jakiej występowały w tekście.
These days before Christmas are always difficult for any boy of ten. Phil was no exception and tried not to show his impatience as each day passed ever so slowly.

Every Sunday since Thanksgiving, Phil had asked the good Lord to arrange for him to find a new sled under the Christmas tree, just this once.

Since early December, Phil had seen in his dreams his family gathered around the decorated Christmas tree. He even saw his new sled among the many presents. If only his dreams came true, he thought.

Phil had hinted to his parents what he would like to get for Christmas. He used the word ‘sled’ very often. He spoke this important word loud and clear when his parents could hear.

The jobs Phil didn’t like were now done with a smile. He offered to dry the dishes after supper. He agreed to tidy his room when his mom asked him to do so. He studied harder and did his homework without being reminded.

Although always busy, Phil noticed anything out of ordinary. Anything which might be a sign that his sled had slipped into the house or was hidden in the garage. Nothing!

Then at last Christmas day arrived. The decorated tree stood like a soldier in the corner of the living room. Under the tree were lots of presents. Gifts for his parents, his sister Cathy and for his younger brother, Tom. His parents smiled and his father nodded, which meant presents could be now opened.

Behind all the presents was a large one marked ”for Phil”. He carefully pulled it towards himself. He untied the red ribbon and the wrapping paper fell away. There it was! His new sled! Phil sat on his heels and whispered ”wow” as he admired his gift. He ran his fingers along its fine lines. He ran quickly to his parents and embraced them both at the same time. He said ‘thank you’ His eyes shone with joy. Phil had never been so happy before.

After the presents had been opened and breakfast eaten, Phil, his parents and siblings went to church. After mass, they went to see the manger set up at the side altar. Phil thanked the Baby Jesus for his new sled and made a silent promise to Him.

Once the traditional Christmas dinner was eaten, Phil asked if he could go out and play. His parents agreed.

Off he went with his sled in tow. He walked straight away to the church, went inside with his sled and came out almost at once. Then he climbed the hill, got on his sled and coasted all the way down.

Again, he walked towards the church. Just before he got to the main door, he bumped into Father John. Phil smiled and said hello. Fr.John noticed something under Phil’s jacket as he smiled his greeting.

What have we here?” asked the priest, pointing. ”Oh, just the Baby Jesus” grinned Phil ”Why did you take Him out of the manger?” inquired Fr.John. ”I just borrowed Him” defended Phil and added “I promised that if I got a sled for Christmas, I would take Him for a ride.

The headmaster made the following speech to the new first year students :

This school is an old and prestigious institution. Among our graduates there are many famous politicians and successful business people. They all say that they owe a lot to the great atmosphere and tradition of our school.

If you are to be members of our school community, you should behave properly.

You mustn’t drop litter in the classrooms. Smoking is strictly forbidden. You don’t have to have your hair very short, but you must keep it tidy and clean. You can eat at school, but not in the lessons. You needn’t change your shoes but you mustn’t bring mud or dirt into the school building.

You can’t address your teachers by their first names unless they are reckless enough to let you do it. You don’t have to wear school uniform but you must always wear
a tie. You needn’t pay for books.

Remember that you are the youngest in this school and that’s why your rights are

a bit limited. Follow instructions and listen to the orders of the older students. Don’t be surprised if an older pupil comes up to you wanting your lunch. He or she has the right to do so. Cheer up! Next year you will not be the youngest.
