T:- Can I help you, sir/ madam/ miss?

S: -Yes. I bought this red umbrella here yesterday.

T:- Yes, what's wrong with it?

S: Actually, nothing's wrong with it. It's quite all right. Anyway, I would like to exchange it today.

T: Well, why do you want to exchange it?

S: Erm, it's about the colour. Here, in the shop it seemed to be OK, but when I took it outside the colour was different. Well, to tell you the truth, my mother doesn't like the colour. And she's right I'm afraid. This colour doesn't go with any of my coats or jackets. I should have thought of it before I took it, I know , but could you help me and exchane it for one in a different colour, please?

Here's the receipt.

T: Well, let me see. Yes, we have these umbrellas in brown, yellow, orange, black, blue and green. What colour would you like best?

S: -I think brown will be the best. Get me that brown umbrella, please.

T: Are you sure it is the right colour? I'm sorry, but I won't be able to exchange it again, so it would be good if you made sure.

S: Yeh, I know. That's O.K. That one is the right colour. Get it to me, please.

T: Here you are.

S: Yes, this is exactly what I wanted. This one will be all right, I'm sure. Is the price the same as the price of the red one?

T: It's $2 more, I'm afraid.

S: O.K. I'll pay the money. Here you are. Thank you for your help. Goodbye!

T: I'm so confused. I really don't know what I should do. I'v e just learned that my room-mate is ill with AIDS. I mean she told me that yesterday. I like her so much. She's such a nice girl. But to tell you the truth I'm rather scared.

S: Well, that's a real trouble. You must be very upset, I suppose. I've read a few articles on AIDS in different magazines. I think you needn't worry so much. You'd better try to learn about the illness as much as possible.

T: Perhaps you're right. To tell you the truth, I don't know much about it. Do you know anything?

S: Yes, sure. It's true that AIDS is an extremely dangerous terminal disease. It attacks the body's natural defence system against disease. It doesn't kill itself but a person who's got it is not able to fight off many other diseases like flu or the common cold. In most cases it leads to death.

T: Sounds like horror. I wouldn't like to get infected.

S: You needn't worry. Many stories about the spread of AIDS are false. You cannot get AIDS by working with someone who's got it or by going to the same school, or by touching objects belonging to or touched by an infected person. I've read that nobody caring for an AIDS patient has developed AIDS himself so far.

T: Are you sure I'm safe? How do people get infected then?

S: Well, the virus can be passed on sexually or by sharing needles used to inject drugs. It can also be passed in blood products or from a pregnant woman with AIDS to her baby. As you can see it's not so easy to get infected.

T: How can I help my friend?

S: Try to be as helpful and understanding as possible. Your friend needs your support. That's it.

T:Thanks for your advice. I’ll think about it.

T: Do you know Mike? He's my class-mate. Yesterday he told me he had been offered some drugs at the party and he accepted. He seemed to be proud of himself. He asked me if I would go with him next time. I said 'no' but he keeps asking.

S:Weel, you'd better refuse and try to avoid him. He doesn't know what he's doing. Many young people turn to drugs to help relax and cope with the stress and problems of their life. They do it because they are bored, frustrated or frightened. They don't realize how dangerous and deceitful it is. At the beginning every addict is sure that he is going to give up the habit, but they often are not able to. Young people don't believe it, but drugs lead to depression, unconsciousness and then they cause death.

T: I don't understand why people start taking drugs. What are the reasons?

S: I think that the basic reason is bad companions. No one has ever become an addict all by himself. Young people usually get into a group of addicts without knowing what they are getting into. They just feel grown-up and proud that the older companions notice and accept them. But what soon happens to them is a kind of horror. They start to suffer from confusion, frightening hallucinations, terrible nightmares. Then they suffer from unbalanced emotions, serious medical disorders and physical deterioration. Soon they become liars and thieves in order to support their habit. They lose health, their hopes and self-respect. There are many books about this problem. I think you could read one. And remember to be sensible and always refuse offers like the one of your friend Mike.

T:Yes, I’ll try to.

S: Would you like a piece of my birthday cake, Mary?

T: No, thank you. I can't. I'm slimming.

S: Are you? How about some vegetable salad. I made it myself. It tastes delicious and believe me - it's got almost zero calories. I used only fresh vegetables and some low-fat yoghurt.

T: Sorry, I can't. I'm slimming.

Oh, no! Look at you! You're slim enough! In fact you're terribly thin - just skinny. What a nonsense it is to slim when you're so slim. You needn't do it, believe me. I think something is wrong with you.

T: Why do you think so? Haven't you seen all those actresses, models and TV announcers? I'd like to look the way they do. Besides I'm not hungry.

S: But you're starving! You've been here for three hours and you haven't eaten anything since you came here. Don't you think it's a kind of obsession? I agree with the opinion saying that fat is unhealthy, but starving is even more unhealthy. It may lead you to serious disorders and illnesses like bulimia or anorexia. Being slim has become a recent obsession which may be dangerous. I'm really worried about you.

T: What a nonsense? I don't know what you're talking about.

S: Well, I've read a lot about healthy dieting. Your diet must be well balanced. You should eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. If you're starving, your body loses iron and calcium which may result in anaemia or dewatering of the body. Anyway, I really can't understand your point of view. Eating is a pleasure.

T:Yes, that's exactly what my mother keeps saying. Maybe you'e right? But I like being slim.

S: If you want to I can give you some advice. You should know that active lifestyle is the most important factor in weight control. Physical activities such as running, walking, swimming or cycling not only help burn calories most efficiently but also make the body less sensitive to stress, lessen appetite and give a sense of well-being.

T: I'm in a trouble. I feel down. I've just lost my job. I don't know what to do. What a shame!

S: Cheer up! Don't worry. Being unemployed these days is not a shame. It's all because of the rapid technological progress and the economic changes. Anyway, I'm very sorry to hear that. I'm sure you can do something about it.

T: Do you really think so? What can I do?

S: First of all you should go to the Employment Office where you'll receive your uneployment benefits. Then you will have to register. I suppose you may also get some income support as you must have some money to live on. It won't be much, I'm afraid, and you will probably have to look for some part-time job. You should start studying job advertisements in newspapers, I think. You can also start calling different employment agencies. You can find quite an interesting job this way.

T: But a part-time job is not the right solution, I'm afraid.

S: Of course, you have to start thinking about your future. You could requalify, I suppose. It won't be easy, I guess, but it maybe the only way out. You may have to do some special professional training at one of the training centres - they offer many different courses. It would be a good idea to improve your English, too. You have to understand that the better qualifications you have the better job you may get.

T: It sounds sensible. But you know how difficult it is to find a job in our area.

S: Well, maybe you will have to move to another area or just a bigger city. They say it's much easier to find a job there and wages are higher, too. Don't worry. Everything will be all right soon. You know that you can always rely on me when you're in trouble.

T: Thanks for your advice. How good it is to have a friend like you!

10. Twoja ciotka kupiła sobie futro z prawdziwego lisa.

  • Zaproponuj wspólne pójście do sklepu, w którym widziałaś piękne sztuczne futra.

Rolę ciotki będzie pełnił nauczyciel

T: I've just bought myself a furcoat of fox. It's a real fox fur, not arificial one. I'm so happy. I have always dreamt of such a coat. Isn't it lovely? Just look at it and tell me what you think of it?

S: Well, you may look lovely. I mean - I can see you're so happy about it. But to tell you the truth, if I were you I would never buy it.

T: Are you serious? Why? What's wrong about it? It's so soft and warm. And it's all natural.

S: Yes, that's why I wouldn't buy it. I think it's disgusting to buy things which are made of or from animals. I don't approve of killing animals for fur. It's cruel and inhumane. Animals are creatures feeling pleasure, anger, loneliness or suffering They are conscious living beings and we shouldn't regard them as walking sources of food or fur. There are now so many different kinds of clothing that it is no longer necessary, or indeed justifiable, to kill animals for their fur. I believe that killing animals for fur should be banned. We shouls learn to share the earth with other animals, not just exploit them. After all there is now artificial fur which can give the look of real fur without the cruelty.

T: Well, maybe you are right. They told me in the shop that I can bring the fur back in five days' time if I change my mind. I think I'm going to do it. Can you tell me if you have seen any shops where they sell those nice artificial fur coats. I'll go and see them.

S: Great! We can go tomorrow, if you don't mind.
